In October 1998 the idea of making quilts as a charity project was born. When winter visitors responded with donations of fabric, yarn, thread, and used sewing machines the project was off and running.
Fifteen to twenty-five women meet each Thursday at the Orangewood Shadows clubhouse auditorium. While some of the women sew quilt tops, others work with the batting/backing, and others tie the quilts with yarn. Upon completion the quilts are sorted to size and then delivered.
Since 1998 an average of 350 quilted items have been produced each winter season.

Quilts are given to the Ronald MacDonald House, Veteran's Hospital in Phoenix and several homeless shelters in the Mesa area.
Another project for the quilters group is the collection of motel soap and shampoo. OWS quilters make drawstring bags to hold the soap and shampoo that are given to homeless shelters.
Financing is realized through a monthly quilt raffle. Winter residents need not be seasoned quilters to help.
OWS Quilts accepts donations of fabric, thread, quilt tops, sewing machines, and money. Plus soap and shampoo for the drawstring bags.
